Culture
Its long history and deep roots in various cultures has made Mobile one of the most interesting cities in the South. Mardi Gras celebrations are huge in the city, with numerous floats, parades and parties that last through to Fat Tuesday. Other major attractions in the city that express Mobile's culture are: The National African American Archives and Museum, the Mobile Symphony and Battleship Memorial Park.

History
Established in 1702, Mobile was founded as a portion of then-French Louisiana, and has belonged to Florida under British and Spanish rule and later Mississippi, and finally became part of present-day Alabama in 1817. A famous location for the Confederacy during the American Civil War, the city avoided much of the destruction typical during that war. Post-war, the city's evolution into the 20th century and transportation needs saw a major growth in population, and while the 60s and 70s caused an economic depression in the city, recent monies have gone into restoring and reimagining Mobile as a modern city.
