150 S Royal St Mobile, AL 36602(251) 208-7652 |
Built in 1723, Historic Fort Conde was erected in order to protect the small community of Mobile from attacks from the British and Spanish navies. The building that now stands on the site is a 4/5 scale model of about a third of the original brick structure. Costumed interpreters lead tours of the fort and its grounds, giving visitors a chance to see how such a fort was constructed centuries ago and learn about Fort Conde's influence in military matters. Set near the waterfront, the fort is near the Museum of Mobile, which operates the fort, and the Gulf Coast Exploreum Science Center.
